The Botanical Building with the Lily Pond in the foreground, as seen in this photo, is one of the most admired scenes in Balboa Park. Built for the 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition, along with the adjacent Lily Pond, the historic building is glassless and one of the largest lath structures in the world. It is 250 feet long by 75 feet wide and 60 feet tall. The plants in the building include more than 2,100 permanent plants, featuring fascinating collections of cycads, ferns, orchids, other tropical plants, palms, and many vibrant seasonal flower displays.
Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre urban park. In addition to open space areas, natural vegetation zones, green belts, gardens and walking paths, it contains museums, several theaters, and the San Diego Zoo. Placed in reserve in 1835, the park's site is one of the oldest in the United States dedicated to public recreational use.

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
