Description
Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) in habitat, surveying the landscape, Lower Klamath/Tule Lake, Northern California. A large print of this photo would be lovely addition to your wildlife fine art collection!
I found the posted FWS sign to be amusing: "Pheasant Hunting Only...Speed Regulations". Is it for the hawk?!
Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) is a large bird of prey. It is broad-winged hawk of the open, arid grasslands, praire and shrub steppe country; it is endemic to the interior North Americaand is used in falonry. It primarily hunts small to medium-sized mammals but will also take birds, reptiles and insects. Mamals generally comprise 80-90% of the prey items or biomass in the diet with birds being the next most common mass component. The diet varies geographically, depending upon the distribution of prey, but the black-tailed jackrabbit, ground squirrels and pocket gophers are major items on the menu. Avian prey can range in size from western meadowlark to the greater sage-grouse. Male and femal FHs have the same markings and the only difference is that the female is somewhat larger.
