Description
I was flabbergasted by the sheer size of this bloom of an Agave attenuate.
Agaves are long-leaved succulent plants that naturally form a rosette shape and produce flower spires of attractive cup shaped blooms. They are drought tolerant and perennial, making it ideal for mature arid gardens. The succulent in this photo, Agave attenuate, is a species of agave sometimes known as the "lion's tail," "swan's neck," or "foxtail" for its development of a curved stem, unusual among agaves. Native to the plateau of the State of Jalisco in central Mexico, as one of the unarmed agaves, it is popular as an ornamental plant in gardens in many other places.
The dark red/brown plant in the foreground is Aeonium arboreum (Sempervivum arboreum), also known as tree aeonium, tree houseleek, or Irish rose, and is a succulent subtropical shrub. It is native to Canary Islands. It bears rosettes of leaves and large pyramidal panicles of bright yellow flowers in the spring. The purple variety 'Zwartkop' has gained in popularity. The tree above is a Peruvian pepper tree (Schinus molle, also known as American pepper, Peruvian peppertree, escobilla, false pepper, molle del Peru, pepper tree, peppercorn tree, Califorian pepper tree, pirul and Peruvian mastic). It is an evergreen tree that grows to 15 meters (50 feet) and is native to the Peruvian Andes.
