Description
This is a digitally modified version of a dazzling view Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) galaxy, captured by NASA's Great Observatories. I have modified the raw NASA image considerably by reducing noise and enhancing the colors, contrast, beauty, balance and luminosity, in order to provide you a breathtaking, high quality, fine art print through this website. The original NASA raw capture is in public domain.
SMC is a small galaxy about 200,000 light-years way that orbits our own Milky Way spiral galaxy. This is a false-color image, representing a wide range of wavelengths of light. X-rays from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory are shown as purple in the photo; visible-light from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is colored red, green and blue; and infrared observations from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope are represented in red. The familiar spiral galaxy is in the left corner of the image and is located behind SMC. Other distant galaxies located hundreds of millions of light-years or more away are sprinkled around the edges of the image.
The SMC is one of our closest neighbors in the Milky Way. Even though it is a small, it is so bright that it is visible to the unaided eye from the Southern Hemisphere and near the equator. Many navigators, including Ferdinand Magellan who lends his name to the SMC, used it to help find their way across the oceans. Because the SMC is so close and bright, it allows us to make new discoveries. NASA's Chandra Observatory, for example, has detected X-ray emission from young stars, with masses similar to our sun, outside our Milky Way galaxy.

What a stunning view of the cosmos - so alive with energy and color rather than the darkness we imagine. Love this Ram. F/L T
