Description
A Giant Sequoia tree (Sequoia sempervirens), Sequoia National Park, California.
UPDATE, JULY 2022: Such images are now especially significant because giant Sequoias are under threat from intense wildfires in California. The U.S. Forest Service is taking emergency action to save these giants, found only on the western slope of the Sierra-Nevada Mountain range in central California.
This is a large stitched vertical panorama (over 12000 pixels in height).
Giant Sequoias and Giant Redwoods are often referred to interchangeably, though they are two different, equally remarkable, species of tree. They naturally occur only in California and have a distinctive cinnamon-colored bark and the proclivity for growing to overwhelming heights. Both also require very specific, distinct, climates to survive. Giant or coastal redwoods thrive in the moist, humid climate of the Northern California coast, where marine fog delivers precise conditions necessary for its growth. The fog adds moisture to the soil and helps trap it there by lowering the rate of evaporation. Giant sequoias thrive in higher elevation habitats than giant redwoods and grow naturally only along the western slope of the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, primarily between 5,000 and 7,000 feet in elevation. They require the periodic dry heat of the mountains in order for their cones to open and release seeds. Largest Sequoias have been measured to be 311 feet in height and over 56 feet in diameter. The oldest Sequoia has been determined to be 3500 years old by using tree-ring dating (dendrochronology).
Sequoia National Park is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in California. Established on September 25 1890, the Park spans 404,063 acres.
