Description
La Iglesia de Nuestra Senora Reina de Los Angeles, or The Church of Our Lady Queen of the Angels, is a historic catholic church in LA's Historic District in northern downtown Los Angeles, California.
Originally founded in 1781 just after the original settlers arrived, the original building was ruined by floods. This building, a replica of the original adobe structure, was then built and dedicated in 1882. The colorful mural you see toward the top of the Church is a relatively recent (1981) addition. It is a copy of the Annunciation from the image of Our Lady of the Angels in the Portiuncula Chapel at Assisi, and was dedicated by Cardinal Manning to celebrate the city's bicentennial. Also called the Plaza Church, this is claimed to be the oldest established church in continuous use in Los Angeles. The building was designated as one of the first three Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments in 1962 and is now also designated as a California Historical Landmark. Like many Latino-American churches in California, this church features beautiful doors/windows, exquisite statues, and very colorful murals.
