Artist's Description
Spanish Broom (Spartium junceum) and Poodle-dog bush (Common turricula, Turricula parryi) wildflowers with a backdrop of burnt trees, San Gabriel Mountains, California. This image was captured in June 2011, two years after the devastating wildfires that engulfed many parts of the San Gabriel Mountains, just north of where we live.
The image may seem tilted, but it is not. It is an illusion because the image was captured on the slopes of San Gabriel Mountains where the terrain is slanted. The camera was perfectly upright, on a tripod.
Wildfires in 2009 burned 250 square miles in the San Gabriel Mountains, the largest devastation in Los Angeles County's history. It caused scorched hillsides and blackened skeletons of trees and chaparral bush. However, the fire opened up canopies, providing sunlight where previously there was only shade and the ash from burnt trees returned essential minerals to depleted soils near the trees.
