Description
Sometimes, I like to step outside my comfort zone and look for beauty in chaotic scenes. I am a little bit tired of my usual style of highly organized compositions of nature with a clean background. Surely, there must be some beauty in chaos. I'd like to capture that beauty, warts and all. Here is a photo of a chaotic cluster of Agaves (Agave attenuata), along with an Irish Rose succulent and peppered with peppercorns from an overhanging Pepper tree. I was attracted to this scene by the green-red color contrast.
Do you see what I see? To hell with composition rules.
Agaves are long-leaved succulent plant that naturally form a rosette shape and produce flower spires of attractive cup shaped blooms. They are drought tolerant and perennial, making it ideal for mature arid gardens. The species in this photo, Agave attenuate, is a species of agave sometimes known as the "lion's tail," "swan's neck," or "foxtail" for its development of a curved stem, unusual among agaves. Native to the plateau of the State of Jalisco in central Mexico, as one of the unarmed agaves, it is popular as an ornamental plant in gardens in many other places. The purplish succulent in the lower left, Aeonium arboreum (Sempervivum arboreum), also called the tree aeonium, tree houseleek, or Irish rose, is a succulent subtropical shrub. It is native to Canary Islands. It bears rosettes of leaves and large pyramidal panicles of bright yellow flowers in the spring. The purple/chocolate variety Zwartkop/Schwarzkopf in this photo is quite popular. The small peppercorn fruits, sprinkled throughout this photo, are 5-7 mm diameter round drupes with woody seeds are from a Peruvian pepper tree (Schinus molle) above, also known as American pepper, Peruvian peppertree, escobilla, false pepper, molle del Peru, pepper tree, peppercorn tree, Californian pepper tree, pirul and Peruvian mastic). It is native to the Peruvian Andes.
