Yosemite may not be known for spectacular fall colors because most of its trees are evergreen. Nevertheless,Big-leaf Maples (Acer macrophyllum), Black Oaks (Quercus kelloggii), Pacific Dogwoods (Cornus nuttallii), and other deciduous trees put up a subtle, beautiful and colorful show around late October - early November, as in this picture.
I was captivated by this forest/woodland composed of Big-leaf Maple, Pacific Dogwoods, fallen leaves, logs, and stones. I was initially overwhelmed by the seemingly chaotic, yet beautiful scene and it took me a while to compose (forests are always challenging). I was attracted to this composition by the Big-leaf Maple tree on the lower right offering to be the foreground anchor, the bent tree and the Pacific Dogwood with lovely red berries serving as the mid-ground, and the greenery beyond being background, with the three composition elements seamlessly stitched together and leading the viewer through scene. I also liked the blue sky poking through gaps between trees, providing some depth.
Trust me, the original full-resolution image is a lot more luminous and vibrant than the lower-resolution reproduction displayed here!
