Description
Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles, California in early morning light. This is a very large stitched panorama, almost 17,000 pixels wide.
Griffith Observatory is a Los Angeles icon, a national leader in public astronomy, a beloved civic gathering place, and one of southern California's most popular attractions. The Observatory is located on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, just above the Los Feliz neighborhood. It is 1,134 feet above sea level and is visible from many parts of the Los Angeles basin.
Griffith Observatory was made possible by a bequest in the 1919 will of Griffith J. Griffith, who also donated the land for Griffith Park (in 1896). The Observatory is located on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. It commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including Downtown LA to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. The Observatory is a popular tourist attraction with an extensive array of space and science-related displays. Since the observatory opened in 1935, admission has been free, in accordance with Griffith's will.
A monthly free public star party is held at the Griffith Observatory, with assistance of volunteers from the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers and the Planetary Society. During the star party, the whole family can look at the Sun, Moon, visible planets and other objects, to try out a variety of telescopes, and to talk to knowledgeable amateur astronomers about the sky and their equipment. The star party is featured in my image "Stargazers at Dusk" posted here at FAA.
