Description
A Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) and a Mottled Duck (Anas fulvigula) enjoying early morning light in the Los Angeles River.
Mottled Ducks are mostly non-migratory and forage in shallow water. Their diet consists of seeds of aquatic plants and grasses, insects, snails and small fish. Canada Geese are skilled at living in human-altered areas, and have established breeding colonies in urban and cultivated habitats, which provide food and few natural predators.
This photo is a new addition to my series on the Los Angeles River, a wonderful urban wildlife habitat undergoing restoration in an attempt to return it and its wildlife to the original glory.
