Description
Petroglyphs, Owens Valley, California. This is a B&W (monochrome) version of my earlier color version.
This petroglyph is located in the Volcanic Tablelands in the Owens Valley in California. These Tablelands encompass 580 square miles area covered by volcanic ash from an eruption 760000 years ago from the Long Valley caldera, located to the northwest. The petroglyph artworks were created by the Paiute-Shoshone Native American Indians 3500-5000 years ago. The meaning of the symbols on the petroglyphs is not obvious. Some symbols are recognizable as deer, bighorn sheep, human figures, and birds. Other symbols include lines, grids, and concentric circles in different configurations. The drawings could have been of ceremonial, practical, and functional significance, or just simply whimsical.
