Description
The seafood restaurant The Crab Cooker has been a Balboa Park/Newport Beach, California, landmark forever with its bright red walls and green-and-white striped awnings. This structure at the corner of Newport Boulevard and 22nd Street was built in 1938 and has been occupied by The Crab Cooker since 1951. It was initially occupied by a Bank of America (the bank’s vault is now the restaurant’s fridge). President Nixon used to stand in line for The Crab Cooker’s comfort food, served on paper plates.
Unfortunately, this iconic look will soon disappear because the building will be demolished and rebuilt, for safety reasons - that is why the flag on the building is flying at half-mast. It is rather sad that this rather unique historic building will soon be no more, so I spent some time to photograph it. A large print of this photo would be a nice reminder of the “Good Old Days.”
