Description
View of Yellowknife Bay, Mars, acquired by NASA's Curiosity Rover on its 137th Martian day on the red planet. This is a digitally modified version of the original 111-image stitched panorama.
I have modified the original raw NASA image considerably to enhance the colors, beauty, balance and luminosity, in order to provide you a breathtaking, high quality, fine art print through this website. This image is over 9100 pixels wide, so the details in a large print (upto 8 feet wide) would be incredible! The original NASA dull raw image is in public domain.
This shows the geology of the location dubbed "Yellowknife Bay" where the rover drilled into a geologic formation called "Sheepbed". The location derives its name after the capital Yellowknife of Canada's Northwest Territories, because of the city's association with exploration of North America's oldest rocks. The Canadian city is located on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, about 250 miles south of the Arctic Circle.
This photo shows the Sheepbed mudstone rocks on Mars in the foreground, with "Gillespie Lake" and "Point Lake" outcrop further up in the scene. These rock formations are thought to contain ancient lake and stream deposits that were once environmentally friendly to microbial life forms. The rocks at this location are thought to have been eroded away by wind for the past 70 million years. At the far upper left of the image is the base of Mount Sharp, the ultimate destination for the Curiosity rover.
