Our ancestors memorialized their legacy through art carved in stone called petroglyphs that have survived centuries of erosion by winds, flash floods and earthquakes. Petroglyphs are pictograms or logogram images created by removing part of a rock surface by incising, picking, carving, and abrading. They are found world-wide and are associated with ancient, prehistoric peoples. They are the most ancient and the most stable form of art that humans have ever produced. Flowing across canyon walls, emblazoning the sides of cliffs, rocks in the desert or on the ground, they display figures and symbols that tell something us about their world.
