A full-size replica of the Curiosity Rover (Mars Science Laboratory, MSL), on display at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
Curiosity is a large robotic rover exploring Gale Crater on Mars. It is about the size of a Mini-Cooper (9.5 feet long, 8.9 feet wide, and 7.2 feet tall). It weighs 1,980 pounds, including 180 pounds of scientific instruments. Also called the Mars Science Laboratory, it was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on November 27, 2011 at 10:02 EST aboard an Atlas V rocket. It landed on Aeolis Palus in Gale Crater on Mars on August 6, 2012 after a 563 million mile journey.
The rover's goals are to investigate the Martian climate and geology, assess if certain locations within Gale Crater ever had environmental conditions favorable for microbial life forms, look for chemical signatures (fingerprints) of past or present life on Mars, investigate the history of water on Mars, and perform habitability studies in preparation for fu...
