The Creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) is a very characteristic feature of North America's hot deserts, tolerates arid conditions by its toughness, and competes with other plants for water. Its small, pointed, yellow-green leaves adapt to conserve water and dissipate heat. These leaves have been used as antiseptics and emetics by native peoples. Its foliage provides refuge for crickets, grasshoppers and praying mantis. The creosote bush originated in South America from which it is believed to have spread to North America during the Pleistocene period (1 million to 10,000 years ago).
