Description
This is a significantly modified image Pillars of Creation captured recently by NASA’s James Webb Telescope with its Near-Infrared Camera (NIRcam). I have modified the original raw NASA image considerably to enhance the colors, beauty, balance and luminosity, in order to provide you a breathtaking, high quality, fine art print through this website. The original NASA raw image is in public domain.
Pillars of Creation has been captured previously by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope (see my science-technology-space collection). This recent capture by the Webb Telescope has significantly higher resolution.
Pillars of Creation is a picture of elephant trucks (massive pillars) of interstellar gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula, 6500 light years away. The name arises from the fact that the gas and dust are in the process of nucleation and creating young stars.
Webb’s new view of the Pillars of Creation will help researchers revamp models of star formation. By identifying far more precise star populations, along with the quantities of gas and dust in the region, they will begin to build a clearer understanding of how stars form and burst out of these clouds over millions of years.
