Description
Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) in morning light at the Lower Klamath Wildlife Refuge in northern California, just south of Oregon.
This is a comparison of the front and back plumage of a Red-tailed hawk in two different images. I captured the image on the left captured earlier, waited for a while for a Red-tailed Hawk to land on the same perch, but it landed with the back facing me.
These images provide a fascinating side-by-side comparison of the front and back plumage, possibly for a field guide. What do you think? It is fascinating how flexible the Hawk’s neck is – it can be rotated by 180 degrees! It is looking for prey in the same direction in the two pictures.
