Description
Closeup of a Giant Sequoia tree (Sequoia sempervirens), Sequoia National Park, California.
This is a monochrome (black and white) companion to my color image of Sequoia Closeup.
Giant sequoias thrive in higher elevation habitats and grow naturally only along the western slope of the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, primarily between 5,000 and 7,000 feet in elevation. They require the periodic dry heat of the mountains in order for their cones to open and release seeds. Largest Sequoias have been measured to be 311 feet in height and over 56 feet in diameter. The oldest Sequoia has been determined to be 3500 years old. Sequoia National Park is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in California. Established on September 25 1890, the Park spans 404,063 acres.

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
