Description
Mission San Buenaventura is the ninth Spanish mission founded in California by the Franciscans, in 1782. It was the last mission established by Father Junipero Serra, a Roman Catholic Spanish priest. It is located on Main Street in beautiful downtown Ventura and functions as a parish church of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, serving about 2000 families.
This picture was captured in late evening light, just before sunset, hence the warm glow. I liked the rather simple, neatly painted building with just a simple front door, two crosses, a bell, an adjoining courtyard and a side door leading to the church - an ultimate example of minimalism. We spent a few hours in the courtyard, peaked in to see (and listen to) a Spanish wedding ceremony and thoroughly enjoyed it. That was on November 15, 2017, about two weeks before this part of California was ravaged by wildfires.
