Description
Statue of Ganesh, with textured background added to give it a vintage look.
Ganesh, also known as Ganesha or Ganapati, is an elephant-headed god in Indian Hindu mythology. The head is symbolic of auspiciousness, strength and intellectual prowess. He is the god of wisdom and learning, as well as the remover of obstacles, and consequently the sign of auspiciousness. It is customary to begin cultural events, by propitiating Ganesh, and older Sanskrit works invoked his name at their commencement. Ganesh is said to have written down the Mahabharata (an epic of ancient India) from the dictation of Vyasa. In the most common representations of Ganesh, he appears as a pot-bellied figure. In his four hands, he holds symbolic objects. His elephant head has only one tusk, as in this photo.
Ganesh figures are most commonly seen with four hands which signify their divinity. I have seen many statues/pictures of Ganesh and he isn't always holding the same symbolic items. In this statue, two of hands are used playing a flute, which affirms life by celebrating its wonders, music being one of these. One hand is holding a conch shell, thought be bring luck and wealth. Not sure what is in his fourth hand. His trunk is raised straight up symbolizing good luck and is holding a lotus, a symbol of enlightenment.
Ganesh has only one intact tusk. The most common story of how this came to be is that Ganesha's pen broke while he was writing down the Mahabharata at the dictation of Vyasa, one of the characters in the epic. Not wanting to miss a word, Ganesha broke off his own tusk to replace the pen!
