The mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra on Sept 8, 1771, as the fourth of the missions in California. Named after the Archangel Gabriel it was designed by Father Antonio Cruzado who gave the building its strong Moorish architectural style. The capped buttresses and the tall, narrow windows are unique among the missions of the California chain. The Mission was damaged by the Whittier Narrows earthquake on October 1, 1987. It has been mostly restored.
