Description
Greater Los Angeles (LA) area, in my opinion, is one of the most culturally diverse, dynamic and exciting regions in the U.S. Especially fascinating is the suburb east of Downtown LA, referred to as East LA.
Los Angeles was founded in 1781 by settlers from central New Spain (modern Mexico). It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. At the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and became part of the United States. Much of the Spanish/Mexican/Latino culture still exists in LA, especially Catholicism.
The Latino catholic roots of the community can be seen in wall murals in East LA, as in this image. This mural depicts Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe - Our Lady of Guadalupe, also known as Virgin of Guadalupe, or Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a replica of the image enshrined in Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world.
Notice the fresh flowers at the base of the mural.
